Invitation to the online seminars of the IEM CAS

With the beginning of the new year, we would like to invite you to continue the Institutional seminars of the IEM CAS, which will take place on the first Thursday of every month. This week (i.e. 6. 1. 2022 from 2 p.m.), we will offer you two seminars:
Role of plasma membrane microdomains in lipid homeostasis

  • Sphingolipids are essential building blocks of eukaryotic membranes and important signaling molecules, tightly regulated in response to environmental and physiological inputs. In the yeast S accharomyces cerevisiae , the plasma membrane microdomain protein Nce102 has been proposed to function as a sphingolipid sensor. We recently discovered that Nce102 changes are localization specifically in regions of increased sphingolipid demand, e.g., membranes of growing buds. Furthermore, the production of Nce102 increases following inhibition of sphingolipid biosynthesis and the protein is internalized when excess sphingolipid precursors are supplied. This suggests that the total amount of Nce102 in the plasma membrane is a measure of the current need for sphingolipids, whereas its local distribution marks sites of high sphingolipid demand. We demonstrate that Nce102 behaves analogously in the widespread human fungal pathogen Candida albicans , suggesting a conserved principle of local sphingolipid control across species.
Next Generation Sequencing data processing – basic principles

  • Next Generation of Sequencing (NGS) is a group of high-throughput methods using the concept of massively parallel sequencing. NGS produces a high amount of data needed to be processed by specific approaches. As a part of the IEMs international mobility project, I performed an internship at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona to learn NGS data processing. In the lecture, as a part of the returning phase of the mobility, I will briefly discuss basic principles of the specific steps of the data processing with some examples from Whole Exome Sequencing and RNAseq pipelines.

The seminar is a part of the International mobility project of the IEM CAS staff and presents the knowledge and skills gained from a short-term internship at the Catalan Cancer Institute in Barcelona.
