The Werner von Siemens Award is organized by Siemens company in cooperation with leading Czech universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

With its scope, amount of financial rewards and history, the Werner von Siemens Award is one of the most important independent initiatives of its kind in the Czech Republic.

The aims of this important award are to motivate exceptional talent from students and researchers, to strengthen the positive attitude of students and the general public towards science, and also, to highlight the tireless work of teachers, which is often wrongly neglected.

The prize is awarded in the following categories:

  • The best pedagogical worker
  • Award for overcoming obstacles
  • The most significant result of basic research
  • The best diploma thesis
  • The best dissertation

The winners of individual categories are selected by independent commissions composed of rectors and vice-rectors of leading Czech universities, the chairman of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the directors of the institutes CAS.

Soňa Vodenková, Ph.D. focused on the research of molecular biomarkers in the case of DNA damage and repair (their role in the process of carcinogenesis, treatment and monitoring of patients).

Genome instability, which arises as a consequence of the combined effect of DNA damage and errors made by the DNA repair system, represents one of the leading forces driving the onset and development of cancer.

The aim of the research was to find potential new biomarkers and the validation of existing biomarkers related to DNA damage and DNA repair, which may be associated with susceptibility to cancer and the patient's clinical outcome. The biological basis of particular biomarkers and their relationships were also investigated. The thesis was based on 12 papers, which were published in international, peer-reviewed journals with an impact factor.
