Although we have gained significant insight into the field of genetics and molecular biology, we still have a lot to learn when it comes to embryogenesis. The nucleus is a key structure of nearly all our cells, but embryos are rather special and re-purposed some nuclear components. One of the key cellular functions is the synthesis of proteins. These are made by ribosomes, which are made in a so-called nucleolus. The differences regarding these processes are described in a recent mini-review article feature in the “Embryonic development” collection published in Biochemical Society Transactions (Portland Press).
