Invitation to the Institutional seminar of the IEM CAS –3D cell culture of astrocytes / TDP43 mutations in the context of ALS

Published 31. 01. 2023

Don't miss Thursday's Institutional seminar of the IEM CAS. This time our scientists will talk about two exciting topics from the field of neuroscience for you:

3D cell culture of astrocytes

  • Mgr. Zuzana Heřmanová / Department of Cellular Neurophysiology

TDP43 mutations in the context of ALS

  • Mgr. Tereza Filipi / Department of Cellular Neurophysiology

Annotations:

  • Traditional 2D cell cultures have long been used in research. However, they do not mimic physiological and pathological conditions sufficiently. To overcome the limitations of 2D cell cultures and simultaneously reduce the number of animals used in research, 3D cell cultures are widely developed. This seminar will summarize my experience with 3D adult astrocyte culture systems obtained during an "International Mobility of the IEM CAS Employees" at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health in Porto, Portugal.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a severe neurodegenerative disease with mostly unresolved causes. The symptoms can vary greatly, but one common denominator of the vast majority of ALS cases is TDP-43 protein inclusions found in the cell cytoplasm. TDP-43 is a conserved RNA-binding protein responsible for splicing in the nervous system, and its mutations lead to autoregulation perturbation. The disrupted balance was linked to pathological changes; however, precise mechanisms are yet to be described. This seminar will report experiences from an international research internship at the King's College London - Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, discussing current knowledge and obtained data.

The seminar will be held in person on Thursday, 2nd February 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the Turquoise Auditorium of the IEM CAS.

We are looking forward to your participation.
