Researchers from the Department of Molecular Biology of Cancer, IEM CAS, headed by Pavel Vodička MD, PhD, are the co-authors of an article published in the prestigious GUT magazine.
The study, in collaboration with the international consortium GECCO, analyzed clinical and genomic data from 112,373 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), including a control group of the (European) population. Based on this study, 13 new genetic variants of CRC were identified that are highly specific for certain anatomical sites (ie, colon or rectal area) and that have not yet been identified by previous studies.
By further analyzing the newly identified genetic variants, the researchers found that the genetic profiles of left and right bowel tumors differed, while the profiles of the lower colon and rectal tumors match. Overall, these results support the idea that tumors arising in different anatomical locations of the colon may have qualitatively and quantitatively different dynamics of origin and development.
