Published 02. 07. 2021

This year, we will present ourselves to the public for the first time as part of the Researchers’ Night - Noc vědců.  We are currently preparing an interesting programme for you, the main topic will be "Ageing". We look forward to seeing you!

The Researchers’ Night , an event that, for one evening, brings life to hundreds of science buildings that no ordinary mortal can enter. Visitors pass through laboratories and lecture halls, experience exploding experiments, and learn about hot topics in depth. Everyone with a passion for science – children, adults, and seniors – is welcome. Meet our scientists and they will teach you to love science.

The human body and time

Ageing is a completely natural and biological process. The human body is "set" for a specific lifespan; under optimal conditions, we can live for a very long time. Many factors influence life expectancy, such as lifestyle, environmental quality, mental health, and economic and social aspects.

Every person has a chronological and biological age. The chronological age is unambiguous. Every year we commemorate it by celebrating a birthday. Biological age, on the other hand, is very individual and informs us mainly about the quality and functionality of the organism. The growth of biological age in relation to chronological age results in a decrease in the vitality and resistance of the organism to the diseases of civilization, especially cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Why do humans get old? Some scientists consider ageing to be a kind of manifestation of organism 'wear and tear'. Our cells are constantly being damaged by toxins from our diet, from the air, and by free radicals from our metabolism and emotional or physical stress. Genetics also plays a decisive role.

It is not possible to stop ageing, but it is possible to avoid specific influences that significantly accelerate this process...
