From 30 May to 1 June 2022, an international workshop of the European projects TUBE and ADAIR, which investigate the impact of air pollution, especially motor vehicle emissions, on the development of neurodegenerative diseases, will take place at Villa Lanna in Prague.
During the workshop, representatives of the partner institutions will present the ongoing results of their research. The main speakers will be scientists from Finnish research institutions and universities. Both projects' principal investigator and coordinator is from the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio. The partner of both projects is the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the CAS (IEM CAS).
The TUBE (Transport Ultrafine and Brain Effects) project was officially launched in 2019 and is a joint research project of 15 European research institutions. The project aims to detect harmful air pollution components from transport and identify biomarkers for the early detection of brain diseases. The current research combines state-of-the-art in vitro models and epidemiological studies to investigate the effects of ultrafine particles from combustion engine emissions on lung and brain function.
The second project mentioned is the ADAIR project on neurodegenerative disease research (EU Joint Programme -Neurodegenerative Disease Research). The project aims to identify new tools for risk assessment and preventive measures in relation to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The project explores the novel hypothesis that an individual's exposure to air pollution alters several biological processes and functions that can be monitored through measurable biomarkers. This allows individuals at increased risk of AD to be identified before its onset, and thus preventive measures can be targeted to specific populations at risk. The IEM CAS is involved in projects involving controlled exposure studies of motor vehicle emissions to identify biomarkers of acute exposure to air pollution using modern molecular biology methods (so-called "omics technologies").
The workshop will also include an official press conference, which will take place on Wednesday, 1 June 2022, at 14:45 in the Apollon Hall of Villa Lanna. Media representatives are cordially invited.
