We would like to invite you to Thursday's online seminar of the IEM CAS, which will be devoted to the topic „Fantastic fibres and how to form them".
3rd March 2022 / 14:00 / MS Teams
Lecturer: Mgr. Jana Hlinková, Ph.D. / Department of Tissue Engineering Annotation: Throughout history, scientists focusing on the interaction of electric fields and fluids invented producing fibers in the sub-micron scale (nanofibers). This process is called electrospinning. It is a relatively simple way of producing long nanofibers that are uniform in diameter and diversified in composition. Electrospinning is a fiber production method that uses electric force to draw charged threads of polymer solutions or polymer melts up to fiber diameters in the order of some hundred nanometers. Electrospinning shares characteristics of both electrospraying and conventional solution dry spinning of fibers. Nanofibrous mats or foam are used as dressings, filling material and drug-delivery systems in various wounds treatment. Let me present to you what I learned during my stay at the University College London - Department of Pharmaceutics of prof. Gareth Williams, where I was introduced to the basics of electrospinning, how to look into polymer and solvent combinations, how many variables enter the equation while spinning, and how to play with it to gain the fibres of specific morphology.
